Second Inning Outburst Helps
In 8-1 Win Over, Niles North
The Maine West diamondmen, currently being plagued by an assortment of troubles, have gone into a slight hitting slump and are now 4-5 in conference action this year. Two injuries are doing nothing for the Warriors' aspirations this year, as Jay Ligget '74, the leading staff pitcher, has a bad arm and Dan Myszka '74 has been out of action the past two weeks with a pulled hamstring muscle.

"We're playing good, but we're just not getting that big hit where it counts," said Coach Al Carstens. Three of the team's losses have been of the heartbreaker type, one-run affairs. The scores of these games were 2-1, 3-2, and 3-2.

But all is not lost. The outfield of Ed Dolan '74, Dan Myszka '74, and Mike Kelley '75 is doing exceptionally well; and the infield is doing well defensively.

In some recent games, on the good side, Maine West won two conference games in a row, beating Niles North 8-1 and Glenbrook North 8-2.
In the Niles North game Jay Ligget's pitching performance was almost flawless, as he gave up only two hits. The Warriors tallied five times in the second inning, with Mike Kelley's bases loaded double, which drove in three runs, the big blow. The double was preceded by walks to Steve Zuccarini '75 and Dan Myszka, each forcing in a run. Jay Liggett struck out 12 Vikings in the game.

In the 8-4 defeat of Glenbrook North, Maine struck again in the second inning. Tom Thvedt '74 scored from third when an attempted pick-off throw went into left field.

The Trojans tied the game in the bottom of the inning, but the Warriors scored three times in the bottom of the same frame to put the game out of reach, although Glenbrook North scored single runs in the filth and seventh. Ron Schroeder '74 pitched three strong innings to get a save.

Maine West will be in the districts on May 9-13, and then they will go on the road for games until May 20, their final home game of the regular season.
