Should MW Adopt A Five Point Plan?
Four years have gone by. Four years and the only time this school ever has a noise level above a snore is when someone breaks a plate in the cafeteria or gets into a fight. But four years have not completely slipped by without a few glaring observations. For lack of a better name I call this a 5‑point plan for making Maine West a school.

1. Faculty and administration should realize that not all students go on to college and that life is more that.

2. Encourage thinking don't discourage it. If a student has something to say, let him say it. He won't incite the entire school to riot. Maybe that way Maine West will turn out individuals‑not programmed (to the prescribed standards) machines.

3. Give credit when it is due. Students are smart too when given a chance to think. Teachers shouldn't preach but guide a student. Even teachers are not all‑knowing.

4. Don't give cynicism and apathy a chance to grow. If a wall is put up between the administration and the student, is it any wonder organizations like Student Council and the newspapers get tired of banging their heads against the wall for simple things like chocolate milk or a juke box and develop a "the hell with it" attitude.
5. Worry less about obtaining new methods of catching students who are cutting classes and more about why they are cutting.

Above all, remember the golden rule; students are people‑not cartons of milk which are used for state‑aid. No one likes to be sold out for a carton of grade A pasteurized when the snow is three feet deep and it's 10 below.

If you agree with this, don't just sit there. Your one scream is easy to ignore, but the screams of hundreds make a pretty big roar. However, if you like being treated like cattle and your biggest thrill in four years is seeing a broken plate, then I suggest you do the following: 1. Put down this paper. 2. Put your head on the desk and sleep; for then you are getting out of this school all that you have put into it‑nothing, and maybe that's all you will ever get out of life.

Sounds cynical, doesn't it? See what four years has done?
