Jesus Movement Becomes
Growing Concern to Students

By MELINDA VAUGHN

The average high school student has lived through the Vietnam War and the space age. Their lives have been forged around various events, the most recent being the Jesus Movement.

Jesus Christ Superstar, Godspell, Campus Life, the late Dr. Martin Luther King, and Billy Graham are a few of the current interests. A few weeks ago Campus Life came to Maine West. A musical group called "Under New Management" performed two concerts, one during an all‑school assembly, the other the following evening.

Under New Management played and sang solid rock during the first half of their evening concert. After intermission they tried to tell the audience of their experiences with Jesus. Fifty‑eight per cent of the audience turned off at this point, using the concert as a social hour.

Why did they suddenly turn off? Despite popular belief, the musicians were not trying to "sell" the audience.

The musicians felt they could communicate with the younger students. That is, through their music they could eliminate all communication gaps. They'd already hit the students with some popular songs, so they felt, well, now on to more serious business.

And serious it is. Most everyone is interested, or at least a little curious, to find out what's going on with Jesus and the Movement.

"Jesus Christ" is more than a word to spew out when you smash your hand. "Jesus Christ" means more than a Christmas scene or a crucifix to wear around the neck.

Sometimes school is a real hassle, especially during fourth quarter. With finals coming up, spring fever, and our growing concern for the future, we all need a little help. Wouldn't life be fantastic if someone existed to shoulder our problems? Well, Jesus Christ is willing to step in and take over. All you need do is ask Him.
