Graduation
Farewell Maine West
BY JAYNE WRIGHT
From that first awkward, embarrassing day of high school, it seemed more than likely that the end of senior year would bring an overflow of happiness and relief.
It's fun recalling all the clumsy, foolish instances walking across the Maine West emblem at the front entrance, being caught on the wrong side of the hail, and inevitably the wrong room! Who would think of looking for upstairs C‑wing down in the pit?
It would be telling a lie to say that sophomore and junior years were uneventful. One study hall in particular witnessed the sight of a couple "minor catastrophes. Not every day does one make a spectacular entrance - including a grand slide unto the floor. The front entrance stairs have taken the blows and seen the glory of a few dozen falls up and down them.
Making new friends from year to year and keeping old acquaintances has become as much a part of high school life as math and English. Getting new teachers, noticing their peculiarities, and predicting their actions is labeled natural and normal by students.
Graduation will bring a sudden, shocking change into the lives of many seniors. Those students who aren't planning on further education will be faced with the termination of many programmed, day‑to‑day responses and situations.
All of the many overlooked and forgotten good times may be surfaced through tears or the overwhelming feeling of loss as graduation day approaches. It's very difficult to give up a kind of life that has become so much a part of all that is important.
What will become of the so well‑hated gym suit? And the last day of school when all the notebooks are deposited in the nearest trash can, there won't be anyone around to decipher all of those once so necessary and vital notes. The papers are all thrown away carrying with them the doodles representing the times t he thoughts were not where they should have been.
For many, graduation means only the end of one chapter in life; but for some it is the end, the closing of the book. Graduation is the commencement of a new and different life - new friends, new adventures, and a world waiting to be discovered.
