VOL. XV, NO. 2
Dear Editor:
When I picked up the first edition of the Westerner, our school newspaper, I was very disappointed. First of all, I can't understand why the football team, which has compiled a mediocre record of one win and one loss, gets the biggest spread of all the teams.
I am all for the football team; in fact, I am a loyal Maine West football fan, but the soccer and cross country teams have done much better. The soccer team has a record of four wins and no losses. The cross country team has 12 wins and no losses and has brought two trophies back to Maine West from the two invitationals they have run in.
The Chicago Tribune considers the cross country team to be contenders for the state title. The sophomores and freshmen both have 11 wins and one loss apiece. These teams are not getting the recognition they deserve.
With great teams like these, why are articles about the new dance studio put on the sports page? The second and third pages of the newspaper have articles about Babe Ruth, Hank Aaron, and the White Sox. Why? Are they a part of this school?
I assure you that I speak not only for myself, but all the members of the cross country and soccer teams and some of our own loyal fans.

Dear Editor:
We hereby protest the actions of the administration in the disruption of the English IV AP class during first period. The arrangement in which a seventh period class was formed from an overcrowded first period class had proved to be satisfactory for all involved.
Both of these classes were fully adjusted in their working situations with the teacher. Therefore, we feel the disruption of this class situation is unmerited.

Dear Editor:
I am sure that you are aware of the popular demand that exists in our school concerning the building of a smoking lounge for our students. I strongly believe that such a lounge should be built.
Let's face facts. Many students today smoke cigarettes regardless of the belief that others think it a health hazard. For the concern of others, students who smoke should be allowed to do so in a place apart from the non‑smoking student body. This would eliminate, for example, smoke filled washrooms and cigarette butts all over the washroom floors.
It would also eliminate detention halls full of smokers and students constantly being called down to the deans' office for smoking. A smoking lounge would also eliminate extra work for the teachers checking the washrooms every time the bell rings.
I think the authorities should consider a smoking lounge, not just for the benefit of our smokers, but for the benefit of our non‑smoking students also.
A Concerned Student
