Cross‑country at Urbana High School in Urbana has gone co‑ed due to a ruling by Champaign Circuit Court Judge Robert Little. The Urbana school board filed a suit last spring challenging the IRSA rule that prohibits competition between boys and girls in interscholastic and intrascholastic sports.

The obviously liberated school board, who incidentally has three female members, decided they wanted to convert their girls from street walkers to cross country runners and put down the cries of their Ms. population.

The students in Urbana were all pretty excited about the whole deal, especially the male cross country squad. Apparently unconcerned with their starting berths, the consensus was they were all happy about giving the girls a chance to compete saying, "They'll be great fun in the locker room!"

Possibly non-discriminatory policies are what Maine West needs - not necessarily for the cross country team whose record shows the only thing they are missing is a bit more excitement in the showers, but for a few other categories where the Warriors are having difficulties.
What better place to "integrate" than on the football team, who have been raving troubles of late. The varsity squad dropped their fourth contest last Saturday and for the first time are really starting to look like the Bears.

What the Warriors need is a morale booster such as the one a few female additions would provide. Just think how much excitement all the body contact would give.

And there's plenty of all‑girl talent to go around; the Powder Puff football game is evidence of that. In that scrimmage the defensive efforts of the Pom Pon girls were not enough to stop the Thompson‑Sakal combination who accounted for the only score of the game. All in all, the girls looked pretty good (on the field).

But it is all still speculation. As far as Urban a High goes, "You've come a long way, baby."
