Gridmen Conference Record 2.1:
Drop Tough Game to Deerfield
The Maine West Warrior football team, even though losing three of their last four games, still have a very good chance of winning in their division.

Of the four games only two were conference games. One was a victory over Niles West and the other a defeat at the hands of a powerful Deerfield team. The other defeats were to Proviso East and Glenbrook North.

On September 29 the Warriors traveled to Proviso East in an afternoon contest. The Warriors, who were slightly "down" after their exciting, emotional, overtime win against Maine South, were outplayed by a much better Proviso team and lost 21‑0.

Glenbrook North then traveled to Maine West's field to play their inter-conference rival. The Spartans utilized the big play in beating the gridmen. Glenbrook scored on a 45‑yard pass and a 25‑yard run to beat Maine West 21‑0.

The Warrior 11 then ruined Niles West's homecoming with a thrilling 21-20 win October 13. The Warriors, a very psyched up ball club, beat the tenth ranked Niles squad with the help of seven Niles fumbles. But this should not overshadow the fact that Maine West played a brilliant game and caused many of those fumbles.
Maine scored its first touchdown on a 32‑yard halfback option pass from Bill Makuch to Ed Dolan. Tom Thvedt kicked the extra point. Mike Janonis tallied on a 4‑yard run but the extra point try failed. Dan Myszka closed out the Warrior scoring in the second quarter with a 45‑yard run.

Coach Jim Morel decided to try for two points and was successful as Terry Quinn passed to Sean Dowd for a 21-0 Maine West lead. Niles West cut the margin to 21-20 but the Warrior defense held.

Last Saturday the Warriors played at the Deerfield homecoming and lost 32-19 in an exciting game. Deerfield scored twice in the first quarter for a quick 13-0 lead.

In the second quarter after a Warrior drive ended just short of a touchdown, the Deerfield squad was forced to punt deep in their territory. The center snap went into the end zone and the punter just barely punted the ball. The ball went to Dan Myszka on the Deerfield 15 and went into the end zone unmolested.

Unfortunately for Maine West Deerfield scored with just 11 seconds remaining in the half for a 20-7 lead. Maine West scored the next two touchdowns, one on a 13-yard pass from Quinn to Dowd and the other on a 1-yard run by Makuch. This made the score 20-19 Deerfield, but the Warriors could not score again.
