Gridmen Shut Out Niles,
Drop Homecoming Bout
Making their last appearance in front of the home crowd this year, the Warriors lost to Niles North 21-14. The scoring began with a 78-yard punt return by Viking Bruce Schecter '74 who was aided by some great blocking. The extra point was good and Niles led 7-0.
Maine West then proceeded to move down the field. Mike Janonis '75 took the kickoff to the Niles North 36‑yard line. Dan Myszka '74 swept for 32 yards, setting the ball at the 4‑yard line. John O'Connor '74 then carried the ball in for the score. The score was tied at half time.
Niles North took the second half kickoff and scored in a 10 play drive, which included a roughing the punter penalty against West.
The Warriors came right back and closed out the scoring in regulation time. The score was tied at 14.
In overtime the Vikings won on a pitch to half back Paul Blakey '74 who scooted around end for the clincher. This made the final score 20-14 to spoil the Warriors' Homecoming.
On November 3 Maine West played their last game of the 1974 season at Niles East. From the outset the Warriors played superb football, registering their first shutout of the year, walking over the Niles East Trojans 36‑0.
The scoring was made by Terry Quinn '75, O'Connor, two by Bill Makuch '75, and a pass from Quinn to Ed Dolari '74 which covered 60 yards.
Coach Jim Morel's varsity overall record is 3-5, finishing second in conference with a 3-2 record.
The sophomores led by Coach Don Olson won 6 and lost 2.
The freshmen ended the season with a 2-5 in conference.
