Harriers End Streak Place Sixth
On Saturday, October 27, the Maine West cross country team competed in the state sectionals along with 16 other schools.

The Warriors proceeded to finish sixth, a position that not only disappointed the runners and coaches but the heard of Maine West rooters who filled the pep bus and cheered the runners on.

The Warriors finished behind Fremd, Maine East, Evanston, Conant, and Notre Dame in that order.

Because of their sixth place finish, the harriers failed to qualify to compete in the state meet in Peoria last Saturday as only the top three teams qualify.

The 110 runners from the 16 different schools ran over hills and through mud on the rainy, windy, and cold afternoon.

The harriers, who were considered good state title contenders by the Chicago Tribune, figured to finish higher in the standings in the sectionals.
Of the five teams that finished ahead of the Warriors, two were beaten by the Warriors during the season; and two others were beaten in the sectionals.

Joe Paul '75 finished as the first Warrior runner but in twenty‑second place overall. Paul Frost '74 finished twenty‑eighth. Glen Oland '74 finished thirtyfifth. Kevin Skahan '74 finished forty‑fifth. Greg Klebe '74 finished fifty‑fith. Paul Mademann '75 finished sixty‑second and and Brian Dunavant '74 finished ninety‑second.

The outlook for next year's cross country team looks bright because two of this year's top runners will return. Both of these runners, Joe Paul and Paul Mademann, have good to excellent chances of representing Maine West at the state championships next year.

Joe Paul was the Warriors' top man from the first few meets, and he will have to lead next year's team as well.
