Senior Wins National Award

Eric J. Swanson '74 was cited as one of the outstanding high school students of English in the country. He was named the 1973 winner at the National Council of Teachers of English annual Achievement Awards.

Last spring the English Department nominated Eric to represent Maine West in the competition. After being nominated, he submitted samples of his writing including one autobiographical sketch; and he wrote a one hour impromptu essay entitled, "The Battles of Spring."

His work was then evaluated by state judging teams consisting of qualified high school and college English teachers. There were 6,400 juniors nominated for these NCTE citations nation‑wide and 850 finalists were chosen.
