20 Juniors Selected
To Help Run City
Youth Appreciation Week was held November 13 to 17. This is an annual event sponsored by the Des Plaines Optimist Club. The purpose of it was to involve students in local government so they could better understand it and experience it at the same time.

The participants met at City gall at 9 am. on Saturday, November 10, where they were appointed an office and served in this office for one day. Mayor Behrel gave a short speech, which was followed by swearing in ceremonies by Judge Smiegel. The students were then taken on tours of the Fire Department, Police Department, Forest Hospital, and other Des Flames facilities. Following that they had lunch at the Des Plaines Elks Club about noon.

A tour of the Chicago Civic Center, Bell Telephone, and T.W.A. Airlines was planned for Tuesday, November 13. A luncheon in Chicago followed the tour. The students gathered at City Hall at 4:45 on Friday, November 16, for an overnight trip to Springfield. They returned on Saturday evening.
