Referendum Must Go Through
Prior to 1970, Maine West functioned with a much smaller library, inadequate art facilities, and without a spectator gym. More than 10 years passed before Maine West was completed, and hopefully history will not repeat itself.

On December 8, Maine District 207 voters will decide whether to approve a referendum which will provide for 6.5 million dollars in bonds earmarked for the completion of Maine North.

This final phase of construction will bring Maine North up to the level of its sister schools by providing proper quarters for music, speech‑drama, and art. In addition, a wood shop, photo lab, print shop, expanded locker facilities, swimming pool, outdoor athletic areas, and an auditorium will be constructed if the referendum passes.
Many voters fear that a sharp increase in taxes will follow the passage of the referendum. However, that is not true, for the retiring of other Maine Township high school bonds will lower the taxes by nine cents per $100 assessed valuation, while the new bond issue will cost only six cents per $100 assessed valuation, making a net decrease in tax rate of three cents per $100 assessed valuation.

The only increase will be in the educational opportunities offered to the students of Maine North. The referendum should be passed.
