Mr. Mattson Instructs
Program at Art Institute
What is a "Yellow Bus"?
The "Yellow Bus" is an art program given at the Art Institute. Mr. Mark Mattson, one of Maine West's art teachers, is an instructor for the program, "Yellow Bus" on Wednesday night, from 6 to 8 o'clock.
Mr. Mattson's class consists of people ranging between the ages of 8 to 21. Classes go on all during the week, but Mr. Mattson's class is held on Wednesday.
There are many art classes held throughout the week, such as "Sea Secrets" and "Windows and Wishes." Each class tries to focus on different forms of art, like light and motion. This art program is a completely different type of art class. The atmosphere is very informal.
This class is not restricted to just painting and drawing. There is a variety of projects one can choose from, such as photograms and chemograms. The teachers and students get so involved in each project that they find that the two‑hour sessions are too short to really get a complete project finished.
Each team of teachers spends about five hours on each session. They spend two hours preparing ahead of time, two hours per session, and then the team discusses exactly what they accomplished during the two hours.
Both the teachers and the students enjoy the casual atmosphere.
One of the recent projects of "Yellow Bus" was when the group went out and drew the city at night - a project which everyone enjoyed.
Mr. Mattson stated, "I find this program a challenge as a teacher and as an artist." He has been teaching at the Art Institute for six and one half years.
