Opening Loss Starts Tankmen
Off Slowly
The Maine West varsity swimmers started off their season on the wrong foot in getting sunk by Proviso West. The final score of the meet was 97-67. Varsity Coach Darrell Green said of the team, "Although we are short on experience and number of men, the team has a good attitude." Mr. Green also stated that although the team lost to Proviso West they made the final score a lot closer than last year's 71-24 shellacking at the hands of the Proviso West tankmen.

Individual improvement is the main goal for the varsity team this year. The meet at Proviso showed some of the best times scored this year.

The team will be helped greatly by seniors Bill Samp and Paul Dyer, the only returning lettermen, and also by George Ericksen '75.
The sophomores, also coached by Mr. Green, lost to Proviso 97-72, despite a fine effort that showed many of the best times of the fledgling season. Mr. Green said that the sophomores have a fine solid team that should get better as the season wears on. Among the several outstanding swimmers are Mark Ericksen, brother of senior tankman George Ericksen, Dave Gafrick '76, Paul Moeller '76, and Jim Stenstrom '76,

Last year, as freshmen, the team showed a final record of 4-6. This year, their goal is to have a winning season.

The freshman team, under the direction of Mr. James Borowski, is considered by many to be the best freshman team ever to be produced by Maine West. They were the solo victors in the Proviso West meet with a comfortable 93-71 margin of victory. Mr. Borowski said that he is extremely pleased with the team, and it could turn into a real powerhouse. The biggest reason for the team's high rating comes from its versatility and talent.
