VOL. XV, NO. 4
Wrestlers Open Against Prospect
Wrestling is the fastest growing sport in high school throughout the country. It involves as many boys as possible regardless of their weight and size. Wrestling is instructive in team- I work, sportsmanship, dis cipline, sacrifice, and meeting obligations.
The wrestling staff includes Mr. Richard Carlini, varsity coach; Mr. Ervin Geisler, sophomore coach; and Mr. William Barringer, freshman coach.
Mr. Carlini feels that the varsity team is "a young team and shows a lot of promise." The team apparently consists mainly of juniors.
Returning senior lettermen are Bruce Winclechter, 119 pounds; Ernie Wickstrom, 145 pounds; and Stan Cordts, heavyweight.
The returning junior lettermen are Bryan Real, 98 pounds; John Bistany, 105 pounds; Brad Bonnivier, 132 pounds; and Tony Meitus, 138 pounds.
There are no requirements to make the wrestling team, according to Coach Carlini. "If you are beaten by one of your teammates, he could take your place."
Mr. Carlini also said that this year's turnout is "the best we've ever had." There are 120 members on all four levels. "A wrestler is a special breed of boy who has a love of combative sports that other athletes shy away from" Coach Carlini says that a wrestler has to "be physically aggressive, and love to win."
Coach Ervin Geisler feels that the sophomores "will have a winning season as a whole but not necessarily a sophomore team record."
Mr. Geisler said that a good wrestler is made up of "98 per cent desire and 2 per cent skills." His requirements for the team are "being able to make it through a practice and running the stairs."
One of the largest sophomore tournaments will be held in the spectator gym on Tuesday, February 12, from 8 a.m. until approximately 8 p.m.
The first meet of the season was Wednesday evening, November 21. The opposition was Prospect High School.
