Dedication Ceremony
Renames Gymnasium
In a dedication ceremony held last Sunday, December 16, Maine West named its spectator gymnasium the Herman L. Rider Memorial Gymnasium, after its former principal of 13 years, Mr. Herman L. Rider. The 3:30 dedication ceremony was held in the gymnasium, and the reception began at 3 and lasted until 5 o'clock. Beside the 600 personally invited guests, the general public was also invited to attend.
The dedication began with the president of the Board of Education, Mr. Robert Claus, reading a statement from the Board of Education. It was then followed by Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Richard Short, unveiling the portrait of Mr. Rider. The Concert Choir also sang a few Christmas songs.
The portrait of Mr. Rider, 2 1/2 feet by 3 feet, was commissioned by Mr. James Coburn, principal, and is hanging in the main office. Both Mrs. Rider and Mr. Coburn decided on the pose, done by the Dale Wilson Studios.
When asked about the portrait, Mr. Coburn replied, "Mr. Rider and I not only worked together as principal and assistant principal but as good friends. I am proud to display an oil portrait of Mr. Rider in our main office."
Mr. Rider was first appointed to the science staff of Maine East as a physics teacher and served as chairman of the department for three years. He also spent many years teaching at Oakland High School, Oakland, Illinois, and in the science area at the University of Chicago. When Maine West opened in 1959, Mr. Rider was appointed assistant principal and chairman of the Science Department. One year later he became principal.
