Overtime Efforts Result
In Warrior Victories
Gold is the predominant color of the varsity basketball team's road uniforms this year, and gold is what the Warriors struck in gaining their first two victories, both on the road, over Libertyville, 57-53, and Niles North, 77-71. Their over-all record is now 2-5, with a 1-2 mark in conference play, as they suffered losses at home to Proviso East, 66-44, Maine South, 63-49, and New Trier West, 70-61. Tonight's game is at home against Glenbrook North with the sophomores getting under way at 6:45.
Against Proviso East on December 1, the Warriors kept the game close until the fourth quarter, when the Pirates outscored them 24-9 to win the contest by 22 points. Doug Myers '74 led Maine West's attack with 14 points and 11 rebounds.
On the following Friday night against Maine South, the home team jumped off to a 12-9 first quarter lead and went into the second half trailing by only three points. Thereafter the Hawks built up their lead gradually, however; and although Myers outscored Maine South's highly regarded center, Pete Boesen, 23-16, the rest of the Maine West offense was thin, as John Clark '75 was second high on the squad with 10 points.
On the next night the Warriors victimized Libertyville to snap a four game losing streak, although it took a comeback of major proportions to get the job done. Trailing by 16 points at one time in the third quarter, Maine brought out the heavy artillery, with Glen Heiden '75 hitting four buckets from long range in the fourth quarter. The game ended in a tie, with the Warriors' momentum carrying them to the win.
One week ago the Warriors' situation looked bad as Niles North came from six points behind late in the fourth quarter to tie the game, sending the bucketmen into their third overtime game of the season. This one turned out to be a triple overtime, however; and when Myers fouled out in the first overtime period, matters began to look even better for the Vikings. Maine "busted out" in the third overtime period, however, winning the game by six points. Heiden had 20 points for the Warriors, while Bill Makuch '75 tallied 18 points.
In last Saturday night's game against New Trier East, the game was fairly even until late in the second quarter, when the Cowboys built what turned out to be a 38-30 halftime lead.
