VOL. XV, NO. 6

Here we are in mid‑term; many of our hearts filled with the after holiday blues. That's when you wish you were still partying instead of studying. At least 95 students at Maine West won't have to be wishing too hard. This year 95 seniors will be graduating in January, as compared to last year's 66 early graduates.
What are the reasons for the increase of the seniors deciding to graduate in January? Taking all the facts into consideration, it can be said that there are two main reasons a student contemplates in making the decision to graduate early. First, the student becomes disenchanted with high school by the time he's a senior. Second, he may need to earn extra money to pay for college expenses.
The following are some answers made by graduates who decided to graduate early. Debbie Schimmel '74 - "I don't feel like I'm going to miss anything and I have to work before I go to college."
Phyllis Newman '74 - "I am graduating early because I want to have free time for a while, free from homework mostly. I could make some money while I'm free." Sandy Trecker '74 -"Because I need money to go to college, and I hate school." Tom Fitzgerald '74 - "I was planning on going all four years in my sophomore year, but as I continued my education the rules became so restrictive I could no longer exist in this environment."
Whatever the reasons may be for a student deciding to graduate early, this is the largest January graduating class Maine West has ever had.
Even though some students have all the required subjects it does not mean that they are mature enough. Some students need those last few months of school before accepting a full time job or even going on to college.
