VOL. XV, NO. 7
Gail, Pete Receive
DAR, SAR Awards
Maine West has announced its winners of the Daughters and Sons of the American Revolution Good Citizens Award. The DAR award has gone to Gail Kaechle, and the recipient of the SAR award is Peter Farmer. Both students are seniors at Maine West.
Peter, as the receiver of the SAR award will be given a Good Citizenship Medal, which will be presented at the traditional Honors Assembly in early June.
Gail, selected for the DAR award, is now eligible for state competition which, if won, would yield a monetary grant. Gail will have bestowed on her a pin symbolic of her good citizenship.
The bases for evaluation of the students by the DAR and SAR committees consisted of four main categories. The nominated students were judged on the degree to which they excelled in the following areas: dependability, service, leadership, and patriotism.
These four categories were further broken down to define and classify the standards more effectively. For example, leadership included the evaluation of the nominees' personalities, self‑control, and initiative. Dependability included truthfulness, honesty, and punctuality.
The DAR Award this year is sponsored by the Twenty‑First Star Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (located in Park Ridge).
Although SAR and DAR are frequently mentioned together, both organizations are distinct and have unique features. The most obvious of these is the expanded fields of DAR. DAR unlike SAR, offers divisional, state, and national competition. The winners in any of these areas receives a monetary award.
The winners at Maine West are selected from six nominees. The nominees were chosen by the homeroom and consisted of three boys and three girls. The female runners‑up were Kris Beedy and Jeanne Wolf. The male runners‑up were Lance Carlile and Greg Klebe.
