Activities Highlight AFS Week
During the week Maine West held its annual AFS Week. AFS Week was held to promote more student interest in the American Field Services. Many students are not aware of what AFS actually does.
AFS Week consisted of different activities. During homeroom assemblies this year's AFS students, Maria Piccolo from Brazil and Anthony Lloyd from South Africa, showed slides and talked to the students about their homeland and the AFS program.
This gave the students the chance to become better acquainted with Maria and Anthony. Because of AFS rules, the two could not previously speak to the student body at large. The AFS committee felt it better for the AFS students to become more familiar with Maine West before speaking at a student assembly.
AFS plans to send three students from Maine West to other countries for the summer on the Americans Abroad Program. The students participating in this program are Barb Andraski '75, Margo Bleharski '75, and Steve Schaefle '75. These students are now waiting to learn whether or not they will go abroad for sure and where they will go.
For next year, AFS plans to bring one foreign student to spend a school year at Maine West. To make this possible, a host family is needed. Ms. Karen Pflederer is the sponsor of AFS here.
