Cagers Topple Hapless Norsemen
Maine West ended a four game loss skein last Tuesday night by edging the Maine North Norsemen 62-59. Prior to that had come losses at the hands of Maine South, 92-55, Niles East, 61-56, Wheeling, 69-57, and New Trier East, 44-40, and a win over Nibs West, 80-78.
Currently the Warriors' overall record stands at 5-13, with a 3-6 conference record. The victory over Maine North came at an opportune time, as the Norsemen are scheduled to he Maine West's opening game op ponent in the Notre Dame regionals following the close of the regular season.
Although Maine North held a 12-6 lead at the end of the first quarter the Warriors came back. They outscored their hosts 24-16 in the second period to take a 30-28 halftime lead and extended their lead to double figure proportions in the second half.
The Norsemen made a valiant comeback, however, and pulled to within two points of the lead at 60-59 late in the fourth quarter. Their rally was foiled, though, as Jim Goelz '74 sank a pair of free throws to seal the Warrior victory.
Center Pete Boesen of the rival Hawks was the principal obstruction to a Maine West win last Friday night at Maine South. Boesen, starting the second half with the burden of having to play with four personal fouls, riddled the visitors' defense for 16 points in the third quarter to insure the Hawks of another win. Bill Makuch '75 led Maine West's offensive output with 14 points, with Steve Zuccarini '75 and Glen Heiden '75 each getting 13 points, and Doug Myers '74 contributing 10.
