In Distance Running
A teacher from Maine East, Mr. Tom Castronova, comes to the Maine West indoor track after school to coach what he feels is the best long distance team in years. Mr. Castronova has been commuting for three years now from Maine East to here and feels that this year's team is closest to possessing the three things that make a successful long distance program. They are make runners enjoy running, have plenty of hard work, and have confidence in yourself and your long distance program.
The long distance program, for those who don't know, is composed of three events - the half mile, the mile, and the varsity two-mile run.
Running the half mile for Maine West this year are Greg Klebe '74 and Randy Van Vleck '75. The mile running unit is composed of seniors Joe Andrews, Pete Farmer, Glen Oland, Rich Reynolds and junior Paul Mademann. In the two-mile run are Paul Frost '74, John McCabe '75, Joe Paul '74, and Scott Swakow '76.
The distance runners are keeping up Maine's tradition of excellence this year. Klebe has run the half mile in 1:59.2, second best in the state; and Joe, only a junior, has captured fourth best in the state in the two‑mile run with a 9:43 mark. Mademann is eighth best in the state in the mile run with a 4:37 mile. Scott Swakow has run the two‑mile in 10:27. He is just a sophomore. Think of what he'll run it in by the time he's a senior.
Coach Castronova said that the team's goal this year is to win all three distance events in a conference meet, to win the district meet, and to send at least a few individuals downstate.
