Rose Gordon Wins Homemaker Award

Rose Gordon, a January graduate, is Maine West's 1974 winner of the Betty Crocker Homemaker of Tomorrow Award. Mrs. Lucille Stiles, chairman of the Home Economics Department, recently made the announcement.

The General Mills contest was held nationwide December 4. This was the twentieth annual contest of its kind. The 50‑minute test consisted of multiple choice and essay questions. The test included knowledge and opinions of nutrition, psychology, money management, and more. The Science Research Association graded the tests.

Rose was chosen from 60 contestants. Mrs. Stiles mentioned that Maine West had "excellent representation" which included a few boys.

Rose received a silver charm with the inscription, "Betty Crocker Future Homemaker of Tomorrow." She will be honored at the spring fashion show on May 15.

Rose is now eligible to win a $1,500 scholarship and a trip in April to Washington, D.C. if she is chosen the state winner.

She is also eligible to receive a national scholarship. The national winners will be awarded $5,000, $4,000, $3,000, and $2,000 scholarships.

"It was a shock" was what Rose said about winning. When asked what made her take the test, she commented, "I thought it would be nice to win a scholarship and get out of my first period gym class."
