VOL. XV, NO. 8
Industry Comes To Rider Gym
In comparison with the rest of the United States, the city of Des Plaines seems small, a mere speck on a map. What many people don't know is that Des Plaines has boomed into a city of over 250 industries.
In order to acquaint the people of Des Plaines with the growth of industry, the Industrial Division of the Des Plaines Chamber of Commerce is sponsoring "Let's Talk" at the Des Plaines Friendship Festival on May 8 and 9 in the Herman L. Rider Memorial Gymnasium.
"Let's Talk," the theme of the festival, is unique because it is the first time a community in this nation has had such a festival.
Sixty‑six booths will be set up in the gym where each participating industry will explain its operations and display products it produces. In addition, a 10‑minute slide presentation of the history of Des Plaines industry from 1835 on will be shown.
The Friendship Festival was not designed to promote industry or recruit people from high school into jobs. Rather, it was organized out of a concern to better relations between industry and the community. In doing so, it attempts to dispel any rumors the community might have concerning the big profits and tax breaks that big business is said to receive.
Participating industries include DeSoto, DoALL, General Telephone Directory Company, Universal Oil Products, Central Telephone Company, Banner Service, White Collar Girls, City Products, Made‑Marquette, and International Tool Works.
Students from all four Maine schools will be asked to attend during school hours from 1 until 4:30. The festival will be open to the general public from 6:30 until 10 p.m.
