The Weaker Sex
Girls Learn Self Defense
By MARY FISHER
If you walk past B‑wing gym and happen to see Mr. Ervin Geisler struggling with a girl or, a mat, don't feel sorry for the girl, but do have some sympathy for Mr. Geisler.
Maine West now has a class for girls who don't think they can defend themselves against a mugger, a rapist, or a fresh person. The GRA is holding sell‑defense intra murals each Thursday in B‑wing gym from 3:40 to 4:45 in the afternoon.
Ms. Karen Kenyon instructs the class and Yvonne Monreal '75 is the student instructor. Girls attending are taught the basic skills of defending themselves. They learn how to defend themselves from attackers coming from ahead and behind and how to escape from two attackers. They are also taught how to escape when grabbed around the neck, waist, or wrists.
These skills are taught by using simulations set up by the instructors. The instructors simulate a suburban street scene in which a girl would be walking. Another girl acts as the attacker. The girl who is walking uses her skills to defend herself.
Mr. Geisler occasionally takes part in the simulations, acting as an attacker. This gives the girls the experience of struggling with a full‑grown person. This sometimes looks almost real.
Girls can attend these intramurals for any amount of time. Usually a girl can learn some important skills during one session. Says Ms. Kenyon, "All shapes and sizes of girls are welcome to come."
