Matmen Race to Districts
Place Third in Competition
The grapplers have wrestled their last opponent in regular season play for 1974. On February 15 and 16 the district meets took place, and Maine West fought to a third place finish behind Maine South and Ridgewood but in front of Maine East, Notre Dame, Maine North, Forest View, and Prospect.

Placing in the meet were seniors Paul Berner and Stan Cordts and juniors Tony Meitus and Brian Real. Paul came home a champion in his weight class, and the others placed second. After the West Leyden Sectional described above, the first two boys in each weight class graduate to state competition. Coach Dick Carlini called the West Leyden Sectional "very tough." East Leyden, for example, one of the competing schools, qualified every boy on their squad to the sectional.
Brian Real and Stan Cordts shared high pin honors this year for the matmen with eight each. The team as a whole pinned 32 opponents. Looking back on their 12-4 record, Coach Carlini said the season was better than he expected and that it was a good young team who played well despite an unusually high number of injuries and illnesses.

The sophomore squadron battled to a 10-3-1 record this year, ending first in their division and second in the conference. Coach Erv Geisler said that the team did very well despite being hampered by injuries to several key players. With several sophomores wrestling on the varsity level, the team established its best record in four years. Mike Tramel '76 and Louis DePasquale '76 ended up fourth in the district in their weight classes which are, respectively, 112 and 119. Next year, Coach Geisler concluded, the sophomores are going to make a higher percentage of the varsity wrestlers.
