Shot‑putters Heave Shots For Warriors
What is round, hard, and weighs 12 pounds?
A shot, of course. Speaking of a shotput, did you know that Maine West has the biggest shot‑putter in the conference? He's 6'2" 230‑pound senior Jeff Keister. According to Coach Rich Shelhamer, Jeff has a good chance to win the conference competition in this category.
At the 12‑school Proviso West Invitational, Jeff came in sixth with his own personal high of 48 feet 5 inches. Coach Shelhamer said that this mark shows Jeff's constant improvement. When the season started, Jeff was hurling around 42 feet, but plenty of hard work and conditioned weight lifting have gotten him into his present fine throwing condition.
Jeff is not alone in his skill as a shot-putter. Another senior, Bob Plecennick, has proved his durability by throwing over 44 feet; and Tom Pocious, a sophomore, has broken the 38-foot barrier. Last but not least on the shot-putting squad is Jamie LaPata, a freshman. He should be a real terror by the time he is a senior because he has already consistently thrown about 33 feet.
In the seasons gone by, Coach Shelhamer said that the cindermen never have given much of a scoring punch with their attempts at hurling this heavy little ball. For that reason, competing schools often beat us in that competition. But this year, with the special guidance of Coach Shelhamer, the shot‑putters could surprise other schools and like the man who gets tired of getting sand kicked in his face in the Charles Atlas advertisements, strike back at their adversaries and defeat them. Enough defeats of other schools could mean a Central Suburban League championship for the Warriors of Maine West.
