Girls' Athletic Department
Strives for More Equality
Maine West's Girls' Athletic Department is growing and expanding in both size and accomplishment. Girls' athletic teams now have a full schedule.
Until last year, colleges were prohibited by law from awarding sports' scholarships to girls. Now, however, the Illinois Education Association (IEA) endorses efforts made in high schools and colleges to place girls' sports and sports' scholarships on the same level as those of boys.
Yet, IEA President Mel Swiedarke states that Illinois is still behind in granting money for girls' sports and sports' scholarships.
Another topic of concern in girls' sports is that male coaches receive higher salaries than female coaches. The IEA plans to start contract negotiations to enable female coaches to receive the same salaries as male coaches.
At Maine West attempts to remedy the salary problem are being executed. Ms. Karen Kenyon, head of the Girls' Physical Education Department, states, "A proposal has been made to the principals of the Maine District to increase coaches' pay for women because of the increased amount of time now involved in interscholastics."
Maine West's girl athletes do receive individual awards for participating on varsity or junior varsity teams. For her first year of participation on an athletic team the girl is awarded a charm, for her second year a wooden plaque, for her third year a marble paperweight, and for her fourth year a trophy.
In the past years girls' scholastic sports have begun to expand and improve. All signs indicate that the years to come will bring further improvement.
