West Whips North In Regional Opener
The Maine West Warriors won their last home game of the season, beating the Niles East Trojans by a score of 68-56. The last home game also closed out the regular season for the cagers. The previous Friday they victimized Niles West for the second of three times this season, 71-67.

The final score was no indication of the closeness of the ball game. A major factor in the game was that Maine West hard fewer turnovers. Showing much frustration, Niles East lost their cool in the final quarter, as exemplified when Kurt Kiesel hit Dan Myszka '74 across the back of the head. Kiesel was ejected from the game with a foul charged to him,.

In the first half the lead was shifting back and forth. The Warriors brought a 32-28 lead into the third quarter. Shooting 52 per cent from the field, the Warriors held on to their slim lead.

Making baskets from all over the court, Doug Myers '74 scored much of his 23 points in the second half of the game. Some great outside shooting was displayed by Bill Makuch '75, scoring 14 points. Niles East was led by Len Weinstein, who had a total of 16 points. The Trojans shot 42 per cent from the field.

After the ejection of Niles East's Kurt Kiesel, Maine West picked up their pace and pulled ahead to stay. The cagers' final regular season over-all record is 8-1-4 with a conference mark of 6-7, putting them in a third place tie with Deerfield in their division of the CSL.

The Warriors entered the annual regional tournament last Tuesday night against Maine North at Notre Dame High School and overpowered the Norsemen in the second half to take a 70-55 victory.

Maine North, playing without their leading scorer, George Kaufman, jumped off to a quick lead in the opening minutes of the game and held a narrow one‑point edge at the end of the first quarter.

West quickly took possession of the lead in the second quarter, however, and held the lead through most of the period, until a scoring spurt by the Norsemen in the waning seconds of the quarter gave them a two point lead at halftime, 30‑28.

Defense keyed the Warrior surge in the second half, with West's pressure resulting in several steals and forcing numerous turnovers. Both inside and outside punch were provided by the Warrior front line of Steve Zuccarini '75, Myers, and Makuch, who combined to hit a total of 18 of 31 shots from the field.
