SEPTEMBER 27, 1974

September has seen quite a few changes in Maine West's sports program since last season. The football schedule, for instance, has been expanded to a total of nine games, an increase of one over last season. And with the appearance of a team from Springfield, the new trend this year could be, "If the team can't go downstate, have downstate come to the team."

Mr. Robert Goerne has chosen to coach in two sports this year, neither of which is the one he coached last season. Giving up his job as junior varsity basketball coach, he has instead volunteered himself for memberships on that immense football coaching staff and the considerably smaller tennis staff. By the way, don't be surprised if later on this year you pick up your new yearbook and upon opening it find not only a picture of last spring's golf team, which is normally the case, but also of this fall's team. Such are the problems that a yearbook staff has to face.
DEBUTS: Maine West's AFS student from Norway, Tor Johnsen, played an impressive game in the soccer team's opener against Highland Park, scoring the second goal in a 2-0 win. An excellent defensive effort by the Warriors in this game was aided tremendously by a trio of juniors: Glen Watson, Scott Gibbert, and goalie Buddy Doroskin.

In case you were wondering why the chain gang working at the football games looks a little tall this year, it could be because the two guys marking the 10 yards are none other than Artie Clark '75 and Glen Heiden '75, two of the taller players on the Warriors' varsity basketball squad. Keep up the good work, fellas.

Golf Coach Ken Olson still has his doubts about this season. He commented, "The golfers aren't doing as well as expected, but both squads are stronger than last year's."

Basketball player and all-around good guy Jim Andrews '75 earned his membership in Brotherhood Society at last Friday's soccer game, helping to control a slight altercation between the Warriors and Maine North which had erupted at the end of the game.
