The Des Plaines Jaycees, at their recent awards banquet, announced that a Maine West teacher was given an award. A Social Science teacher, Ms. Mary Gienko was given the award: the Most Outstanding Young Educator for the 1974-75 School Year.

The award was presented to Ms. Gienko by Mr. James Coburn, principal. The inscription on the award reads, "Presented to Mary Gienko of her selfless devotion to the youth of Des Plaines - Des Plaines Jaycees 1975."

To be eligible for the award, Ms. Gienko was first recommended by her department chairman, Mr. Eric Edstrom. She also met another important eligibility requirement which was that she had to be under 35 years of age. When asked about Ms. Gienko, Mr. Edstrom replied, "Ms. Gienko has made a significant contribution to the Social Science Department at West and to her profession. She exhibits great classroom techniques in methods and in interests to her students."

One of Ms. Gienko's achievements is that she was an honor graduate from Northern Illinois University. Ms. Gienko also lives in Des Plaines and is a member of the Des Plaines Youth Commission.
