Cindermen Finish First
At Conference Meet
The Maine West track team has never lost a Central Suburban South divisional meet since they originated three years ago. This year was a repeat performance.
On Tuesday, February 25, the Maine cindermen took control and the divisional title. Placing in the meet were Scott Unger '76 and Mike Kelly '75, fourth and fifth respectively in the 50‑yard dash. Steve Myers '76 took a fifth in the high hurdles and third place in the high jump.
In the two‑mile run Joe Paul '75 took a first place, and John McCabe '75 took a fifth. Scott Sykora '75 took a second in the pole vault and Jim Winecki '77 took a fourth in the same event.
Glen Watson '76 took a first in the long jump, and Jim Ford '76 took a fourth in the shot put. In the 440‑yard dash Kelly placed first, and Howie Blietz '76 took third. Randy Van Vleck '75 took first in the 880‑yard run.
The 880‑yard relay team, consisting of Unger, Norb Ploszaj '75, Rudy Martinez '75 and John Whipple '75, took third place. Whipple took a second in low hurdles, and Gary Brenner '75 took first place in the mile run.
The mile relay team took first place. The cindermen who run the relay are Kelly, Blietz, Randy Van Vleck '75, and Whipple. Maine West went on to win the conference meet at Maine East on March 1.
The cindermen who placed were Van Vleck in the 880‑yard run; Kelly, who took second in the 440‑yard run, and Blietz, who took a third; Whipple, who took a third in low hurdles; and Brenner, who took a second in the mile.
The four‑lap relay took a second place, and the mile‑relay took a first. In the pole vault Sykora took a second, and Myers took a fourth in high jump.
