Hard Work Produces Township's
Maine Way
Students, while you are in your classrooms did you ever take notice of a plaque hanging on the wall? This plaque is in all the Maine schools in every classroom.

The plaque is entitled The Maine Way, and on it are the words that all students should take into consideration. These words are Non‑prejudice, Integrity, Respect, Responsibility, Friendliness, and Sportsmanship.

The Maine Way originated with the Student Council' of Maine East in 1954 as a guide for the students. It was put up as a plaque to serve a common bond for students and to remind them of these important words.

The 1954 Maine East Student Council divided into committees and spent all year getting the students to approve The Maine Way. Voting was done in homerooms. The students criticized the plaque, but the Student Council fought for ratification.

Finally the students approved the plaque; and after a few years, it spread to all the Maine schools.

Mr. William Kener, sponsor at Maine East in 1954, said, "The Student Council worked very hard and did a commendable job by bringing forth The Maine Way plaque."

The Rotary Club is furnishing Maine West with a plaque called the 4‑Way Test to be placed in every classroom. On the plaque it says: The 4‑Way Test of things we think or do. 1. Is it the truth? 2. Is it fair to all concerned? 3. Will it be good will and better friendship? 4. Will it be beneficial to all concerned?

The 4‑Way Test is an additional guideline like The Maine Way for students to take into consideration.
