Music Dept. Presents Annual
Spring Concert
The Maine West Music Department presented its annual Spring Orchestra Concert on Thursday, May 1 at 8 p.m. in the auditorium. Appearing in the program were the Intermediate and Concert Orchestras conducted by Mr. Francis Vaupel, director of orchestras.

The 15 piece Intermediate Orchestra opened the program with George Frederick Handel's "Little Fugue" and portions of the "Suite for Strings" by Mark Antoine Charpentier.

The 65 member Concert Orchestra followed immediately with the "Royal Fireworks Overture" also written by George Handel, the "Andante E. Scherzo" by Keith Bissel, and the "Polka" from "Shvanda" by Jaromir Weinberger.

The Concert Orchestra played a piece entitled "Dance Rhythms" by Wallingford Riegger. The concert came to a close with a medley entitled "Michel Legrand Selections" which featured that composer's most popular songs.
The medley contained excerpts from "The Windmills of Your Mind," "Pieces of Dreams," and concluded with "What Are You Doing for the Rest of Your Life?"

When asked to comment on the concert, Mr. Vaupel said, "This is probably the most difficult program the Maine West Orchestra has played since I came here. The music was extremely demanding. In order to perform the music the people in orchestra had to work hard to learn many advanced playing techniques that were important to their musical development."

The string members of the Concert Orchestra rehearse every day during periods 4 and 5A. They rehearse with selected wind players from the Concert Band (which rehearses simultaneously in the band room) on an average of one day a week for upcoming concerts. The Intermediate Orchestra rehearses during seventh period but uses no wind players.
