Students planning to get summer jobs should apply at the Guidance Office now for a social security number, if needed. It now takes six weeks or longer to issue a card from Baltimore.
Dr. Ladd Invited to Conference on Computers
Dr. Norman Ladd has been invited to participate in the Annual Conference on Educational Applications of Computers. This was held at the University of Illinois, Urbana, on April 25 and 26.
Mr. Silkowski Has Article Published
Mr. Daniel Silkowski, chairman of the English Department, recently had two articles published in professional journals, and has served as a consultant for a college board.
In January the Kentucky English Bulletin, published Mr. Silkowski's analysis of alienation in the Hemingway short story, "Soldier's Home." Also that month, the Illinois English Bulletin, published an article which traced the development of the elective program in the District 207 English Department.
Fourteen Students Attend P.A.S.
On April 19 the Illinois State Chapter of the Percussive Arts Society held the second annuals P.A.S. "uncontest" day for percussionists from junior and senior high schools. It was held at Triton College in River Grove.
Fourteen students from Maine West participated. They are seniors: Bill Hanley, Kathy Suchta, James Moritz, Larry Keller, and Ed Schmidt; juniors: Steve Myers, Sue Melchert, and James Chrisos; sophomores are Mark Lindahl, Joanne Jerger, Bob Sadler, and Craig Marchewka; the freshman was Charles Certo. All of the students are taught by Mr. Jake Jerger. They performed solos on the tympani, marimba, vibraharp, and drum set.
The solos were repeated here on Thursday, April 25; the contestants were judged in their individual areas. The winners of the contest were marimba solo: Kathy Suchta; percussion ensemble: Jim Elser, Bill Hanley, Joanne Jerger, Tim Keenley, Larry Keller, Mark Lindahl, Sue Melchert, Jim Moritz, Steve Myers. Bob Sadler, and Kathy Suchta. The tuba solo was done by Tim Keenley, clarinet solo by Tom Fischer; flute solo by Beth McCarthy; woodwind ensemble: Leslie Rusch, Tom Fischer, Dave Fischer. Steve Chamberlin, and Sue Krett. The vocal solo was by Sandy Harris; vocal ensemble: Debbis Wilson, Sandy Harris and Diane Roman. The violin solo was by Gabriele Meissner, cello solo Doug Merkel, piano solo by Jean Schillmoeller, and a piano solo by Carl Stone.
These students performed yesterday in front of a panel of judges who were to decide which ones of them would be performing in the annual May Music Festival on Friday, May 16.
