Young Netmen Hold 1-7 Mark
The varsity tennis team has encountered very tough competition this year, as its 1-7 record shows. They placed sixth in the Maine West Invitational on April 18.

A powerful Niles East squad downed them, 5-0, on April 17, and an equally powerful Glenbrook North team crowned them 4-1, on April 16. Deerfield beat the Warriors, 5-0, on April 15. The Warriors fell victim to a tough New Trier East team, 5-0, on April 14.

New Trier also beat the sophomores, 4-1. Deerfield crushed the sophomore squad, 5-0; and Glenbrook North downed them, 4-1, on April 16. Niles East shut out the sophomores, 5-0, on April 18.

Coach Roger King called this year a "rebuilding year; we are simply a representative team. We have to work harder to compete with the more experienced players of other teams."
He also said, "It's not that we are all that bad; it's just that everyone else is all that good. We find it very difficult to compete against them."

Coach King stressed that the Warriors are not crybabying about their competition. The varsity squad is simply working harder against these teams. This year's team is the first Maine West team ever to have a losing record, though. Last year's team finished with a record of 8-7; and in all the years of Maine West, the varsity teams have a record of 115-46.

Mike McGraw '76 and John Minardi '77 play in all the meets, as does Al Finch '77.

The scarcity of older players has forced Coach King to pick varsity players even from the freshman team. Frosh tennis players are Bob Wyatt '78 and Tom Gebhardt '78.
