West Places Second
At Niles N., Prospect
In the past few weeks the Maine West Warrior track team has come up with a couple of big second place finishes in important invitational meets and also racked up one dual meet win.

In the invitational action the Warriors took second in the Niles North Invitational and then came up as the runner‑up in the Prospect Invitational. West finished behind Lane Tech in the Niles event and second to York at Prospect.

Individual marks in the Niles North Invitational were a first place by two‑miler Gary Brenner '75 (9:51.4); a first place by Joe Paul '75 (4:32) in the mile; a first by Norb Ploszaj '75 in the 220‑yard run; a third by Bill Wadman '75 in the 330 low hurdles; a first place 10.4 by Scot Unger '76 in the 100‑yard run; and a team fifth in the mile relay. The Warriors could not manage one point in the field events, though.

At Prospect Maine ended up a night's work by finishing only 10 points behind York (57-47) in the Prospect Relays. Westmen recording state meet qualifying times were Paul and Brenner in the mile, Unger in the 330-yard run, and the 440-yard relay team with a 44.2.
Dual meet competition was even more eventful for the Warriors as Maine took Glenbrook North, 74-63. Taking first places were trackmen Paul in the mile, Unger (100-yard dash), Joe Genualdi '76 in the pole vault, and the 880 relay, mile relay, and 440-yard relay teams. Unger, in the 440, took a second first place trophy home.

Brenner (one mile), Joe Farrell '76 (high hurdles), Randy Van Vleck '75 (880‑yard run), Rudy Martinez '75 (220‑yard run), Joe Parsons '76 (long jump), and Wadman (low hurdles) all took second places in their respective events.

Racking up third places were Howie Blietz '76 (440‑yard run), Jeff Brydges '77 (880‑yard run), Jim Winiecki '77 (long jump), Dan Sikora '75 (high hurdles), and Farrell in the low hurdles.

Looking towards the big state competition in the future, the Warriors, behind Coach Ron Brown, look as strong as ever.
