Softball Team Splits 2 Games
After beating Glenbrook South, 11-10, on April 17, the girls' softball team lost on April 23 to Niles North by a score of 5-4. Meanwhile, the girls' track team dropped two meets. On April 21 they lost to Maine East, 91-40, and lost again on April 24 to Niles East, 72-58.
The season started on a fine note for the softball team. A nine-run first inning against Glenbrook South helped them on their way to the 11-10 victory. Three singles followed by a big double by Cathy Huntoon '77 were the key blows of that inning.
In the fourth two singles by Huntoon and Annette Arnold '78 coupled with walks to Kris Tosterud '75 and Ruth Bernick '75 resulted in the two winning runs. Nancy Habetler '77 went the distance pitching, giving up seven walks and 13 hits.
On Wednesday, April 23, the Warriors were beaten by the Niles North Vikings, 5-4. The score was tied at 1-1 until the fourth inning, when the Warriors outscored Niles North that inning, 2-1.
The Vikings then tied the score at 4-4 in the fifth. The winning run for the Vikings was scored on two errors in the seventh. The losing pitcher, Habetler, gave up only two hits in the full seven innings.
Unfortunately, the girls' track team didn't fare quite as well. On Monday, April 21, the Warriors lost to Maine East, 91-40, and on Thursday, April 24, to Niles East, 72-58.
First place winners for the Warriors at Maine East were Mary Fisher '77 in the mile, Karen Siese '78 in the 220‑yard dash, Yvonne Monreal '75 in the discus, and the 880‑yard relay team.
