Congressman Mikva Speaks
on Law Day
May 1 was Law Day at Maine West with Congressman Abner Mikva as guest speaker. Both events were part of a format designed to give students ideas in ethics and government and the operation of the political system.
In an effort to familiarize students with the law system, the Business Education Department and the Social Science Department combined and formulated a mock trial. Actual cases were heard, and students were asked to deliberate on the evidence.
Law Day was co‑sponsored by the Northwest Suburban Branch Law Association as a way of getting students interested in the legal profession and to demonstrate the understanding of American Law.
As guest speaker, sponsored by Student Council, Mr. Mikva, who has been a frequent visitor to Maine West, came to discuss his view with students.
Congressman Mikva spoke about the ethics in government. According to Mr. Eric Edstrom, Social Science Department chairman, "Congressman Mikva indicated to students that Watergate occurred not because of a sudden interest in elections but because too few people were concerned with the election process beforehand."
A member of the House Ways and Means Committee, Mr. Mikva related that he would like to see grass roots politics take place in Illinois. Congressman Mikva is currently sponsoring anti‑handgun legislation.
Along with Mr. Mikva came a crew of television cameramen. They were using him to film a documentary on the life of a Congressman.
Mr. Edstrom stated, "The whole day was an overall success. The students were presented with a variety of problems, with the moot trial, and even though a different verdict was reached it was an interesting educational experience."
