Cindermen Capture Third Straight
Conference Title
The Central Suburban South Division meet was held Tuesday, May 6, at Niles East High School. This was the meet which decided which cindermen would qualify for competition in the conference meet.

To be able to compete in the conference meet the trackman must have placed in the top six of his event. There are six teams in each division.

The qualifiers for the conference meet were as follows: Gary Brenner '75 and Brian Tolan '77 in the two mile; Scott Unger '76 and Rudy Martinez '75 in the 100‑yard dash; and Unger and Howie Blietz '76 in the 440‑yard dash.

The 880‑yard relay team also qualified for the meet with the team consisting of Norb Ploszaj '75, Bill Wadman '75, Martinez, and Don Murray '77. Other qualifiers were Randy Van Vleck '75 and Jeff Brydges '77 in the 880‑yard run; John WhippIe '75 and Joe Farrell '76 in the low hurdles; Ploszaj and Unger in the 220‑yard dash; and Joe Paul '75 in the mile run.

The mile relay team, consistirg of Murray, Blietz, Van Vleck, and Whipple, also qualified.

In the field events the following were qualifiers: shot put, Jim Ford '75; long jump, Paul Dick '75 and Joe Parsons '76; triple jump, Dick and Jim Winiecki '77; high jump, Mike Klebe '76 and Steve Myers '76; and pole vault, Winiecki.

The next meet was the Central Suburban Conference meet, and Maine West put on a good show. The West cindermen took first place for their third consecutive conference title.
The final score saw Maine West with 120 points; the second place score was 81 points by Glenbrook North High School. Maine West took six first places and set three conference records in the meet.

The following cindermen took places in the conference. In the two mile Brenner took first with a time of 9:26.0, and Tolan took third. Joe Paul set a new conference record in the mile by breaking the conference record which was set just last year. His time was 4:16.2

The 880‑yard run was won by Van Vleck in 1:56.8, and Brydges took a fourth in that race. Unger also took a first in the 440‑yard dash with a time of 5.6 seconds and Blietz placed fifth in the same race.

Unger also took a first in the 220‑yard dash and a second in the 100‑yard dash with times of 22.6 and 10 seconds respectively. Ploszaj placed fifth in the 220‑yard dash, and Martinez took a fifth in the 100‑yard dash.

In the low hurdles Whipple took a first and set a conference record of 38.7 seconds. Farrell placed fourth. The 880‑yard relay placed third with a time of 1:32.9. The mile relay placed first with a time of 3:26.0, which is below state qualifying time by a second and a half.

In the field events, Winiecki placed fourth in the pole vault with a vault of 12' 6". Paul Dick long jumped 20' 3" for a fourth place. In the high jump Myers tied for first place, which led to a jump off in which he placed second but still set a conference record of 6' 4 7/8". Klebe took a fifth in that event.
