Netmen Earn 3-2 Decision
Over Demons
The varsity tennis team, coached by Mr. Roger King, continued an 11-year tradition by defeating Maine East, 3-2, on Monday, May 12. Tim Keenly '76 won, 7-6, 6-4, playing first singles. The first doubles team of Mike Hand '76 and John Minardi '77 also won, 6-4, 6‑3.

Also winning, 7-5, 7-6, was the second doubles team of Al Finch '77 and Mike McGraw '76. The IHSA Districts were held at Maine West and Rand Park on May 9 and 10. Maine West tied Elk Grove for fourth place out of 10 teams.

McGraw won his first round but lost his second round to the eventual winner. Rick Petrucci '75 and Hand placed third in the doubles competition by losing two out of three sets in the semi-finals.

The freshman tennis team placed second in the Maine North Invitational, held on Saturday, May 10. Bob Wyatt '78 placed first in the first singles competition.

In the second singles competition Tom Gebhardt '78 placed second. Also placing second was the first doubles team of Jeff Cook '78 and Rich Gerhart '78.

In the junior varsity's first two meets Maine West defeated Fenton, 5-0, on Friday, April 11, and defeated Elk Grove, 5-0, on Wednesday, April 23. The freshman squad also defeated Fenton, 5-0, and Elk Grove, 4-1, on April 11 and 23, respectively.

Frosh/Soph Coach Robert Goerne commented that "These freshmen and junior varsity wins show a promising varsity team next year."
