The Maine West girls' varsity softball team, over half way through their season, holds a 4-2 total record and a 2-1 conference standing.

In a game against Niles North on April 23, Maine led most of the game, with Niles finally tying up the score at 4-4. In the bottom of the seventh inning Niles North scored the winning run on two Maine West errors, bringing the final score to 5-4.

Maine's top hitter was Karen Gafrick '77 with two for four. Nancy Habetler '77, the pitcher, struck out seven, gave up six walks, and Niles touched her for only six hits.

Maine West won a non-conference game against Arlington, 16-8, on May 6, in which Irene Weingartner hit a grand slam home run. The score was tied 8-8 in the sixth, when four more runs were scored by Maine West. Jenny Bruns pitched and Kris Tosterud '75 hit a double and was two for four in the game.
Maine West played an exciting game with Deerfield on May 8. Deerfield started the scoring with one run in the second and another in the third. They scored two more runs in the fourth to lead 6‑0.

In the top of the seventh Deerfield's first batter stretched a double into a home run to put Deerfield ahead, 11-10. But the batter failed to touch third and was put out by the alert Maine West catcher, Debbie Carlstrom '77, nullifying the run.

In Maine West's final attempt in the bottom of the seventh, Laurie Meisner '76 singled, Gafrick got on base on a fielder's choice, and Huntoon singled. Meisner's attempt to score, however, resulted in the first out. Gafrick, on third base, came home on a passed ball by the Deerfield catcher, scoring the winning run. The score was 11‑10.
