Choosing a Life's Career
Proves Challenging
By MARY KAY McCLAUGHRY
"What are you going to do after you graduate?" is a question asked of most high school students quite often. The answers vary from person to person.
Some students are very sure of their answers. Many have decided on a definite full time job or on a college to lead them into a chosen profession. Many others though haven't made a decision yet. Freshmen are often told they don't have to worry yet, but senior year comes quicker than most expect.
According to Mr. James Killam career counselor, the percentage of students going to college, both two- and four-year, has risen. The amount of students going to a trade school has remained the same, and the percentage of those going straight into jobs after graduation has declined.
Whether a person goes straight into the job market or to college, once on a job many can expect to be asked to get more education or special training. "Things change so fast," says Mr. Killam.
For those going to college the: most open job fields, according to the Endicott report, an independent study, are engineering (especially for women), accounting, sales and marketing, business administration, liberal arts, math and statistics, economics, production management, and chemistry.
The Endicott report, through a random sampling of all fields and businesses, found the need for college‑educated men in 1974 was up for 61 per cent of those involved in the survey and down for 12 per cent. The need in 1974 for college educated women was up for 70 per cent and down for 7 per cent.
Even in the most closed of fields, teaching, there is hope. Mr. Killam says the "top people will probably find jobs." Dedication interest, and willingness to work a little harder all help.
As for people going straight into the job market after they graduate, the energy crisis is a factor to finding a job. "The energy crisis has been bad for many fields. It has made many companies cut down on hiring," says Mr. Killam.
The decision is a hard one to make, but one thing for all to keep in mind is that most people do not stay at the same job for their entire life. Flexibility is something a person needs whether he goes to college or to a job.
