Barb To Be AFS Student;
Destination: Unknown
It's coming to the end of a long year, and AFS is once more on the brink of a new one. Although information, on next year's AFS student who will be attending Maine West for the 1975-76 school year still cannot be disclosed, it has been tentatively decided that the family of Maine West student Julia Claus '76 will host a foreign student chosen by the American Field Service.

This year there were 11 students who applied for placements in AFS countries all over the world. They were interviewed and judged on the answers they gave concerning their abilities to adjust to an environment different from their own. A student from Maine West would attend school and live with a family, leading the sort of everyday home‑life similar in regions to family life here in the United States.

Eventually the 11 applicants were narrowed down to two. The AFS offices named Barb Wright '75 as the official Maine West AFS student. This summer Barb was to depart for Thailand; but because of a threatening political crisis in that country, she had to turn down this chance of placement.
However, Barb was placed on a waiting list, and she still hopes New York will contact her soon with good news of perhaps another placement.

One of the most deciding factors in choosing a host family is the personality profiles that are filled out at the beginning of an AFS year whether a student and family are compatible and the interests they share are important in a fulfilling, active AFS year for a student and his host family.
