Homecoming Activities To Begin
in Earnest This Afternoon
The Homecoming festivities this year will begin this evening with the parade and football game and will conclude tomorrow night with the annual dance.

The Homecoming Parade this afternoon lines up at 2:30 in the Maine West Drive and starts moving at 3. The parade will travel through downtown Des Plaines and back along Oakton and Lee Streets. Included in the parade will be the Homecoming queen candidates, new and old floats, and the Maine West Marching Band.

Float building has gone on all this week, and each group hopes to win the contest for the best float. Each graduating class and many clubs will have floats in the parade. All floats will in some way reflect the main theme of Homecoming, "Western Triumph."

The Homecoming football games are tonight. The sophomore team will play at 6 p.m. and the varsity team will play at 8. Both of the teams will be up against the Deerfield Warriors.

The Maine West varsity quarterback, Terry Quinn, '75, said this about the game, "We have the potential this year to take the conference championship. Therefore, this game with Deerfield is one of the key games of the year. I think the fact it's our Homecoming will give us an emotional edge." The highlight of halftime will be the crowning of the Homecoming queen. During halftime, the floats will parade around the field. Also the Maine West Marching Band, Pom Pon, and the twirlers will perform.

There are nine candidates for Homecoming queen. All are senior girls who were chosen from their class in homeroom balloting. They are Connie Arkus, Yvonne Monreal, Audrey Nyberg, Paula Potter, Lynn Raupp, Lynn Sexton, Ellen Vana, Stacy Vande Vusse, and Cheryl Van Putte.

The girls were called by Student Council the night before the announcement in assembly on Monday, October 7. When asked how they reacted when told they had made the court, each candidate answered. Most of the girls said they were surprised.

Yvonne Monreal mentioned, "I was totally shocked with tears."

Ellen Vana answered, "Oh, my God, you're kidding!"

Paula Potter said, "What?"
Lynn Sexton responded with "I guess I was shocked."

"You've got to be kidding," commented Audrey Nyberg.

Some of the girls had humorous responses. Connie Arkus's was "I thought that they miscounted."

Stacy Vande Vusse's was "I was tickled pink."

Lynn Raupp was in the shower when called and when told she was on the Homecoming court questioned, "Are you positive?"

Cheryl Van Putte mentioned that she was "thrilled and surprised."

"We want everyone to have a good time," said Lisa D'Argo '75, sales chairman of Pep Club, about the Homecoming weekend. Pep Club has been getting ready for Homecoming weekend and getting everyone else ready too. During lunch periods Pep Club has been selling mums and buttons saying "Drown Deerfield."

At the football game tonight helium balloons will be on sale according to Lisa. The mums, buttons, and helium balloons are all to make Homecoming special and fun, observed one Pep Club member. Lisa D'Argo is also making the costume for Chris Czarkowski '75 who will be dressed as a Warrior Indian. Chris will be the mascot at the Homecoming game tonight too.

The Homecoming dance will be held tomorrow evening at 8:30 in the auditorium. The theme is "Indian Summer." Tickets have been on sale in the cafeteria during all lunch periods for $3 per couple. Alumni may purchase tickets at the door or during halftime of the football game.

Senior Class Council has been planning decorations, ticket selling, and publicity for the Homecoming weekend. "We are hoping to see many alumni come back for this weekend," commented Mary Kay McClaughry '75, Class Council publicity chairman for Homecoming.

"We would like Homecoming weekend this year to be a lot of fun for alumni and students," Mary Kay added, "the more involved a person gets in the activities of Homecoming the more fun."

The queen will reign at the dance, which will conclude the Homecoming events.
