The Maine West summer band was awarded a first place at the Illinois State Fair in Spring field last August 13. The band, directed by Mr. Paul Magnusson, played a half hour concert and competed against bands from all over the state. The bands were judged on the performance of the music selections chosen and the overall effect upon the audience. The band consisted of any band member as well as band alumni and featured Margie Clem '77, Miss Majorette for the northern United States, as solo twirler.

Three Maine West faculty members took aerial photos of the Des Plaines River Valley. Mr. Verne Brownell, Mr. John Nugent, and Mr. James Scofield flew to Kenosha, Wisconsin, then west to Elgin, and south to Braidwood trying to photograph the geological history of the Des Plaines River Valley. These slides illustrate the impact of man on his environment. Mr. Brownell states, "One can really appreciate from the air the good and bad things that man is doing to his environment." They hope to use these slides in both the earth science and social science curriculums.
Maine West graduates excelled at the University of Illinois in Urbana this second semester. The 1973 graduates received a 4.02 grade point average on a five point scale. This is considerably higher than the 3.87 grade point average of all beginning freshmen.

Mr. Daniel Silkowski, chairman of the Maine West English Department, attended a workshop for advanced placement teachers. This workshop, held at the O'Hare International Tower, October 4 and 5, exposed teachers to new ideas and techniques in teaching. To promote the advanced placement program and to provide the opportunity for students to earn college level credit, the College Entrance Examination Board, who sponsored the workshop, sent these teachers to other school districts to provide information to schools hoping to initiate such a program.
