Gridmen Defense Stifles Vikings
The Warriors picked up their first victory of the year last weekend by defeating Niles North, 7-6. They previously had dropped two more games of their season, losing to Oak Park, 22-20, and Niles West, 26-0.
The Warriors defeated the Niles North Vikings in a real thriller. The Vikings took the opening kick-off and marched down the field 78 yards for the score but failed on the two-point conversion. The score remained 6-0) until midway through the third period.
The Warriors turned the game around when Norb Ploszaj '75 made a tremendous tackle on Nile's Friedrichs. The Warriors marched down the field 81 yards but were stopped on the 1‑yard line without scoring.
Niles North couldn't seem to get anything going against the tough Warrior defense. The Vikings punted to the Warriors, who received the ball on Nile's 44‑yard line. West went to work immediately.
Terry Quinn '75 passed to Bill Makuch '75, who avoided three tacklers and was finally brought down on the 7‑yard line. Two plays later Mike Janonis '75 plunged from three yards out for the score. Mike Pancich '75 kicked the extra point and the Warriors held on to win their first game of the year.
The Warriors opened their conference season with a loss to the Niles West Indians on October 4. The Dad's Night game started with only three drives in the first half. Niles West scored on two, while Maine failed in their attempt on the 2‑yard line. In the second half Niles West ran away with the game.
On other levels the sophomore team beat Niles West, 30-0, but lost to both Oak Park, 22-15, and Niles North, 26-24. The "B" scores were Maine West 16, Oak Park 8, and Maine West 14, Glenbrook North, 0.
