Division Soccer Title
Goes to Maine West
The varsity soccer team squeezed by Niles East last Saturday, 1-0, on a goal by Norm Hillner '75. This game was played at Niles East. On Tuesday, October 15, the Warriors nipped Maine South in overtime, 2-1, to win the division title.
Tuesday's win brings them to a conference record of 5-0. They have played 12 games totally, eight of which have been shutouts. Outstanding defense was played by Mark Grzebieniak '75 and also by three juniors on the squad: Glen Watson, Matt Serna, and Scott Gibbert.
Buddy Doroskin '76 made two sensational stops in the net, one diving to his left, and one leaping high into the air. Asked how he made those saves, he replied, "Reflex, all reflex." Norm Hillner scored on a corner kick with 5:43 into the second period. Coach Dave Winter called it "a great team effort."
Coach Winter also credited Greg Koeller '76 for coming off the bench to do an excellent job on offense. Tor Johnsen '75, A.F.S. student from Norway, summed it all up by stating, "We win games by hustling. When a good team hustles, it wins. "
Niles North was trounced by the varsity on October 8, 4-0, and the Warriors sneaked by Maine East on September 27 by a score of 4-3.
The junior varsity didn't do quite as well as did the varsity last Saturday, as they tied Niles East, 1-1. Niles West was beaten 1-0 by the JV on September 30. Maine East topped the JV, 4-3, on September 27.
The sophomore soccer squad lost 2-0 to Niles East on October 12. They defeated Niles North on the eight, 1-0. Maine East was beaten by the sophomores on September 27 by a score of 2-1.
