VOL. XVI, NO. 3
PE Grading System
Undergoes Revision
A district‑wide committee from the four Maine Township High Schools has changed the Physical Education guidelines. The committee was made up of teachers, administrators, and students.
The committee determined that 50 per cent of the physical education grade would be determined by skill development; approximately 20 per cent by knowledge, which includes the rules and regulations of the various sports (this 20 per cent could also be measured by written and oral tests given before and/or after the sport); and not less than 30 per cent would be dependent on sportsmanship, enthusiasm, adherence to regulations: such as dress, behavior, and participation in class activities.
The committee was composed of 10 members from the four schools. The members on the committee from Maine West were Mr. James Coburn, principal; Mr. Ken Olson, Boys Physical Education chairman; and Chris Hell '76.
The guidelines for grading PE students state that if the student had the knowledge and attitude that student may earn credit if he or she has low skills.
District policy states that varsity athletes must attend PE classes; however, the District Committee suggested that when a varsity athlete has a game or meet scheduled on a certain day that athlete should be assigned tasks that do not need the energy required for the scheduled game, such as refereeing or assisting in class, a substitute for regular class activity.
