VOL. XVI, NO. 3
Fifth Place Finish in Sectionals
Earns Downstate Trip for Paul
The cross country team ended one of its finest seasons ever, coming in fourth place at the state sectionals and losing its chance to go down state. Joe Paul '75 was the highlight for the Warriors as he finished in fifth place and earned a right to go down state.
Gary Brenner '75 placed twelfth, Paul Mademann '75 took twenty‑seventh, Jeff Brydges '77 forty‑fifth, Terry Walter '78 sixty‑sixth, Scott Swakow '76 eighty‑eighth, and John McCabe '75 ninetieth. There is a sad note to this last finish, in that McCabe was sick with the flu on the day of the race.
John did the best he could, though, fighting off the pain and running a good race.
In the district meet on October 22, the story was a much happier one. Joe Paul was the district champion, coming in first. Gary Brenner came in third, John McCabe thirteenth, Jeff Brydges twenty‑nineth, Paul Mademann thirty‑third, Terry Walter forty‑second, and Frank LeBeau '76 seventy‑second. The Warriors as a team came in second out of 17 teams.
On Wednesday, October 23, Maine West hosted the Junior Varsity Invitational. Maine West took first place as a team and Scott Swakow '76 was the champion, coming in first place.
The annual conference meet was held Friday, October 18. with the varsity coming in third place in competition with 11 other schools. The junior varsity took second place with Gary Salavitch '75 taking first place and becoming the junior varsity conference champion. The sophomores also took second place, and Jeff Brydges was the conference champion.
The varsity's overall record for the season was 18-1 and 10-0 in conference. The sophomores were 16-3 overall and 9-1 in conference, and the freshmen were 11-8 and 4-6 in conference.
